About Us
Christina & Murray West are your hosts at Grand on Victoria Lodge in Hawera.
With my career in hospitality, Murray and I have combined our skills and knowledge. Murray is a retired joiner with 50 years experience, so he ensures our 1914 Californian-style bungalow is well maintained.
Also a keen golfer, Murray is always happy to show off the Taranaki golf venues. When I am not in the garden I enjoy playing Bridge. When time allows, I also enjoy a round of golf. We are spoiled for golf courses in South Taranaki and we have a golf cart we can make available for our guests.
Proud to live in Taranaki, we love showing guests what our area of the world has to offer visitors who may come overseas, or who, like us, are NZ born and bred.
We also enjoy travelling, and meeting people from all over the world. This is what keeps us offering our home for guests to stay.
Our Property
If you want a break in a UNIQUE home, come (alone or as a couple) enjoy what we and our lovely town of Hawera have to offer. Share the experience by inviting another couple to come you.
We own a vision of loveliness we love to share with others. We invite you join us for a night or more to celebrate, relax or just recharge your batteries.
Grand on Victoria is going to be transformed over the next few years into a guest lodge we hope will rival the best that New Zealand has to offer in boutique accommodation. We plan to build new standalone suites after making improvements to our existing B&B rooms with the addition of en-suite bathrooms.
Built in 1914, our Californian Bungalow is a ‘Grand’ home situated within 5 minutes walk to the main shopping area, bars and restaurants in Hawera. It is full of native NZ timbers (mostly Rimu) and the craftsmanship is not lost on anyone who walks through the door. Murray is a retired joiner who loves to add furniture items as needed by restoring or creating new items also made of native timbers.
Our guest rooms are large spacious areas where you can relax, take in the views and even eat your meals if you wish. Our formal dining room however is hard to resist if it is something special you desire (evening meals by prior arrangement only).
Our garden areas, front and back, are private also and there a plenty of spots to sit in the sun or enjoy a meal.
Breakfast is included daily with a selection to suit all appetites.
If it is something special you are looking for we believe we can offer that – we are experienced hospitality providers who know how to go the extra mile for our guests.
Located so close to town on Victoria Street you can walk to a local café, bar, restaurant or the cinema. We will happily deliver you and pick you up anywhere in the town area free of charge.
Our Area
Being a rural town of just over 12,000 residents, Hawera is not short of much.
We have all the usual fast food franchises and stores.
We have a fabulous world class attraction in Tawhiti Museum which is a must see for young and old. If it’s something more strenuous than a round of golf you seek, then our fabulous Mount Taranaki has some great hikes for all grades including all the way to the top.
Beaches are only a short drive away and a days fishing is also attainable.
There is so much to do here, you might even need another night or two to achieve it all.
Discover Hawera & South Taranaki
Hawera is found on State Highway 3 on the Southwest Coast of the North Island, at the base of the majestic Mount Taranaki, one of New Zealand’s four main volcanoes.
Only 72km from New Plymouth and a 3.5-hour drive to Wellington, Hawera is surrounded by the fertile plains of Mt. Taranaki and is a thriving rural centre with extensive industry and agri-business services.
Hawera also services the main centre of New Zealand’s on-shore and off-shore oil and gas industries along the South-West coast.
The South Taranaki area has a lot to offer and we are sure you will return because you did not get time to do it all. Bring your bike (predominantly flat riding) or the golf clubs (3 great courses within 15 minutes of town) or just a comfortable pair of shoes for some great tracks not to mention climbing our beautiful Mt Taranaki.
Catering to almost any sporting interest, including bowls, tennis, croquet, swimming and at least 8 golf courses within 30-45 minutes drive; Hawera is also the perfect starting point to begin the world-renowned Great Surfing Highway to the Southwest and the World Forgotten Highway to the North. Both areas are ideal for hiking, walking and trekking.
Surf Highway 45 runs along the Taranaki coastline between Hawera and New Plymouth.
Nearby beaches include Opunake Beach, Kaupokonui Beach, Mana Bay / Patea Beach and Ohawe Beach.
Te Ngutu Golf Club is one of South Taranaki’s most picturesque 18-hole courses. It is a short 10-minute drive away. The Hawera Golf Club is our local 18-hole links course.
Other nearby golf clubs include Eltham Golf Club, Manaia Golf Club, Opunake Golf Club, Patea Golf Club, Stratford Golf Club, and Waverley Golf Club.
From the mountain to the sea, there is so much to experience in Taranaki.
Grand on Victoria is situated in South Taranaki, an ideal location to venture out to the mountain or teeter on the coast line looking out into the ocean.
The ‘Visit Taranaki’ website is full of information on amazing places to go and interesting things to do.
If you’re into scenic walks there are some great ones in South Taranaki.
Recommendations include the Dawson Falls Walking Tracks and the York Road Loop Track, especially after you’ve been to Tawhiti Museum!
Other popular options include the Rotokare walkways – Lake Walkway and Ridgewalk. The Lake Rotokare Walkway is a beautiful scenic walk around the lake. There is a wetland boardwalk and a floating viewing platform, both built to wheelchair standard.
A visit to Tawhiti Museum should be on everyone’s To-Do list. This world class attraction has been created in an old dairy factory on the outskirts of town and is open all year round with Winter hours being Friday-Monday but Sunday is a certainty all year round. The Traders and Whalers boat ride is a real treat for young and old.
Voted in the top 3 best New Zealand Museums, Tawhiti Museum details New Zealand’s indigenous and settler cultural history including displays created in collaboration with Sir Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
The museum uses life-size exhibits and scale models to capture the past in a series of super-realistic displays.
All the displays – including the life size figures were created from moulds cast from real people – are designed and built on the premises.
TSB Hub, better known as ‘The Hub’, is Taranaki’s premier sports, recreation, events and function centre.
The Hub sporting complex caters to many sporting events including rugby, tennis, netball and cricket and also hosts events like the Hot Rod Nationals, Davis Cup Tennis qualifying rounds and roller skating.
Equipped with a gym, café, bars and restaurant/function areas able to facilitate weddings, family, business or community events, The Hub is within easy walking distance to Grand on Victoria, making Hawera the perfect place when seeking a venue for a national event or family gathering.
The most iconic feature of Hawera (which is Maori for The Burnt Place) is our Water Tower which can be seen from various points around the area.
The Information Centre is currently located at the base of the water tower and for a small charge will give you a key so you can climb to the top and get some fabulous photos plus some exercise too of course.
